Exhibition Study Group Publications

Exhibition Study Group Publication No 1 ‘Kelvingrove and the 1888 Exhibition’ by Stanley K. Hunter (now out of print) was published in 1990. For this the Exhibition Study Group (E.S.G.) helped to finance the major part of the production costs. Whilst two books had been privately published before 1990 at the expense of the author D. Knight, since E.S.G. Publication No. 2 in 1994 the costs of printing have been wholly met by the E.S.G. This has been possible through the generosity of a past member Karl T. Illingworth who was instrumental in setting up a publishing fund with a £3,500 personal donation for future publications. The sale of the books to E.S.G. members since then has been on a virtual non profit making basis. Apart from E.S.G. No. 2 which was made available to the public through wholesalers these books can only be obtained through the E.S.G.

The reason for this restricted sale policy is simply because when the various mark-ups are added by the wholesaler and then the retailer, the books are priced out of the market. The E.S.G. has been able to adopt this policy because since its formation in 1978, firstly Karl T. Illingworth and then my son Kenneth. W. Tonkin have very generously taken on board all the costs and labour of printing and distributing our Journals. These 16 page A4 size Journals are published four times a year, and the next one due out in the winter of 2016 will be our number 123.

Books No. 1 and 2 were privately published by Don Knight. Numbers 3 to 11 were published by the Exhibition Study Group. All the prices include postage and packing.
